Why does my baby
wake up at 5:00 a.m.?

Early Morning Wakings Explained

Few things are more discouraging than starting your day before sunrise. Many parents expect nights to improve as their baby gets older only to find themselves wide awake at 5:00am wondering what went wrong.

Early morning wakings between 5:00–6:00am are one of the most common sleep challenges parents experience, especially in the first two years. While frustrating, these wakes are usually related to schedule alignment, sleep pressure, or circadian rhythm rather than a true sleep regression.

What Counts as an Early Morning Wake?

For most babies and toddlers, a biologically appropriate morning wake time falls somewhere between 6:00 and 7:30am.

A wake up earlier than 6:00 am is typically considered an early morning waking, especially if:

  • Your baby seems tired shortly after waking

  • The rest of the day’s schedule feels “off”

  • Naps start getting pushed earlier and earlier

Even babies who sleep well through the night can still struggle with early morning wakings.

Common Reasons Babies Wake at 5:00am

Early mornings are the lightest stage of nighttime sleep. By the time your baby reaches 4–5am, their body has already completed most of its restorative sleep cycles.

Because sleep is lighter at this time, even small disruptions can lead to waking.

Some of the most common reasons include:

Overtiredness at Bedtime

It may sound counterintuitive, but babies who go to bed too late are actually more likely to wake early.

When a baby becomes overtired, their body produces cortisol (a stress hormone) that can cause sleep to become lighter in the early morning hours. Read more about the overtired issue here.

A Schedule That Needs Adjustment

Sleep schedules change rapidly during the first year.  If wake windows are too long or naps are no longer aligned with your baby’s developmental stage, early morning waking is often the first signal that the schedule needs adjusting.

Too Much Daytime Sleep

On the other hand, some babies wake early simply because they’ve already had enough total sleep in a 24-hour period.

When naps stretch too long or occur too late in the afternoon, it can reduce sleep pressure (what keeps us asleep for a long time) in the early morning hours.

Environmental Disruptions

Around 5:00am the world starts to wake up.

Even subtle changes can disrupt sleep, including:

  • early morning light

  • household noise

  • temperature changes

  • hunger for younger babies

Because sleep is lighter at this stage of the night, babies are more sensitive to these factors.

How to Help Your Baby Sleep Later in the Morning

While every child’s sleep needs are unique, there are a few strategies that often make a meaningful difference.

Protect an Earlier Bedtime

If naps were short or the day felt long, an earlier bedtime can actually help your baby sleep later the next morning.

For many babies, a bedtime between 6:30–7:30pm supports the most restorative overnight sleep, but in some cases even a 5:30 bedtime is the right move.

Evaluate Wake Windows

As babies grow, the amount of time they can comfortably stay awake between sleeps changes.

If wake windows are too long, overtiredness can build and lead to early morning waking.

If wake windows are too short, your baby may not have enough sleep pressure to stay asleep through the early morning hours.

Finding the right balance can make a significant difference. Not sure what schedule to use? Get my free schedule guide here.

Keep the Room Very Dark

Because the body begins producing wake hormones as soon as light enters the room, blackout curtains can help extend sleep in the early morning hours.

Many families find that making the room darker than they think necessary can improve morning wake times.

Treat Early Wakes Like Nighttime

If your baby wakes before your desired wake time, try to keep the environment calm and dark.

Avoid turning on lights or starting the day too early whenever possible. Consistency helps reinforce the body’s internal clock.

When Early Morning Wakings Persists

Sometimes early morning waking persists even after parents have tried adjusting schedules and bedtime routines.

This is often a sign that the overall sleep pattern, including naps, bedtime timing, and sleep associations, needs a more personalized approach.

With thoughtful adjustments and consistency, many babies are able to shift their mornings later and develop more predictable sleep patterns.

Support for Families in Washington DC

If you’re feeling stuck with early morning wakings, you’re not alone. Many of the families I work with in Washington DC, Alexandria, Arlington, and Bethesda experience this exact challenge.

Through concierge in-home and virtual sleep consulting, I help parents create a clear plan so their baby can learn to sleep independently and settle into a rhythm that supports longer nights and more predictable mornings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is waking at 5am normal?

Waking around 5:00–5:30am can happen occasionally, especially during periods of developmental change or when sleep schedules are shifting. However, for most babies and toddlers, a biologically appropriate wake time typically falls between 6:00–7:30am. If your baby consistently wakes before 6:00am and seems tired shortly after waking, it may be a sign that their schedule, bedtime timing, or sleep environment needs adjustment.

Should I start the day if my baby wakes early?

In most cases, it’s best to treat early morning wakings like nighttime if they occur before your desired wake time. Keep the room dark, avoid turning on lights, and respond calmly without signaling that the day has started. Starting the day too early can reinforce the habit of waking at that time. Consistency helps your baby’s internal clock gradually shift toward a later morning wake time.

Will earlier bedtime fix early morning wakings?

Sometimes it can. Many parents assume that a later bedtime will help their baby sleep later, but the opposite is often true. When babies become overtired, their bodies release stress hormones that can cause lighter sleep in the early morning hours. An earlier bedtime, especially after a day with short naps, can help reduce overtiredness and support longer overnight sleep. That said, early wakings can also be caused by schedule misalignment or environmental factors, so bedtime is only one piece of the puzzle.
